I think a lot of medical research is lazy, and people some researchers find it easy to copy someone elses findings. Basically showing only respect to their own Bank balances. I volunteer at a local museum and I commented that my stomach was hurting the other week and my covolunteer said that I always say that and maybe something is wrong. I do always complain of stomach trouble and it seems so normal for me.
Well that explains that period of my life but not all the years before and since. I also recently cut out dairy but not in my morning coffee lol. After reading your post and most of the comments I intend to replace my morning coffee with green tea to see if that helps my morning rumblings and frequent trips to the bathroom.
It might also help with what I call an extra dehydration problem with my morning exercises. Wish me luck. Thank you, Sharon. I stopped coffee 3 days ago but the problem came back. How long does it take after stopping coffee to be normal again? I thought it would work right away. It can take up to six weeks.
The body needs time to repair itself and get everything back in order. It is not an instant change. I wish it was though…. Just lucked upon this site. Oh thank God! I thought I had a severe problem! And now i know if I have decaf, the problem should subside.
Thank you for this information! I think there is another thing you could add to your observations of caffeine. There seems to be allot of talk about people saying they have IBS and caffeine makes it worse, but actually the reason you have iBS in the first place is because you drink too much caffeine filled stuff. Firstly, as you mentioned, caffeine will stimulate the bowels, and it does this in an unnatural way.
Our bodies did not evolve to deal with those things. Secondly, all those caffinated drinks out there these days are often full of sugar as well as cause your ph levels to become highly acidic. This inbalance in acidity will also cause bowl problems. Those two mixed together high acidity, with unnatural stimulation of the bowels are a perfect recipe for bowel disaster!
I used to drink V energy drinks and coffee like crazy. I had no problems for years, but eventually my bowels gave in to the abuse, and I got IBS with symptoms bad enough to put me in hospital first time I had it. Coffee and energy drinks should only be used in careful moderation. Otherwise prepare for bowel destruction later in your life. I found that coffee was my trigger for my morning diarrhea.
When I cut out the coffee and switched to tea it disappeared. Every time I drank coffee, eat chocolate or had a glass of milk in a matter of minutes I experienced serious diarrhea. I discovered Lactase, which is chewables containing the enzyme that assists in the digestion of cows milk. I had to try different fibre supplements, as some works better than others.
Psyllium husk dietary fibre works best for me. I had the runs every day for 23 years yes you read that right until I finally discovered that coffee was the culprit. I can tolerate anything else with caffeine — just not coffee. And I can tolerate decaf coffee. Seems mysterious. I later discovered that if I regularly take a fibre supplement, I can tolerate the coffee!!! I like Metamucil I bought a bag of psyllium and will be trying that too.
I suspect this is somehow related to the health of my microbiome. Better late than never :. I had diarrhea every morning for 6 months.
So bad I lost 16 pounds I stopped eating everything, dairy, glutton etc….. Nothing stopped the diarrhea. Then I stopped drinking coffee and wow! Im sure there is some other issues in my tum tum but what a improvement. I wish i had read this article months ago. I drink tea to start my day. Specifically a yea meant ti eade the stomach. Good luck and health to you all. I recently flew across country for a vacation and was VERY worried about how I would manage the bouts of diarrhea that I live with constantly.
I thought about it a lot and decided that coffee was definitely a trigger for me especially since having my gallbladder removed years ago.
So a few days before my trip I cut out coffee and on the days I was travelling I did not eat or drink anything other than a sip or so of water. Amazingly, I did not have any bathroom problems but I was also taking Imodium when I felt that I might have a problem for example: when I ate some foods rich in dairy.
My planning helped greatly and was able to enjoy the trip without any anxious moments. The only thing is that while I felt coffee was a trigger I did not think it was the caffeine in coffee but perhaps another chemical in the coffee.
I came to this conclusion because I can drink iced tea, hot tea or soda without any adverse reaction. I know you say the tea may be less reactive for some people and I guess that could be the reason….. I had severe diarrhea for about 7 years, but did not go to a doctor for it. I noticed that I felt pretty good in the mornings when I would wake up, but after my morning coffee with cream and sugar sometimes artificial sweeteners , I would feel tired.
I was curious as to how I would feel if I stopped drinking my coffee, and believe me, I love my coffee. The result was amazing. My diarrhea stopped immediately and I feel much more energetic. Stop drinking coffee for at least 1 week to see if you notice a difference in your health…you can always go back to drinking coffee if it does not affect you. Also, I have issues when eating ice cream!! I have tummy trouble , none with milk though!!

I drink coffee every morning 2 cups and every morning I run to the bathroom. If I am in my car — it becomes an emergency. I have cramping and loose stool, but only in the am and only once a day.
I had suspected celiac disease tested negative because I eat whole grains in the morning with my coffee. Anyway, based on your post and other reading, I now think my issue may just be the caffeine combined with abundant fiber. As a BC survivor, I think anything that causes your body to be out of balance should be eliminated.
I think my love affair with coffee may be over. Thank you for this great post. And I believe the answer for me has been probiotics.
I have a feeling that is similar to some of the stories here — especially Chad — where now you are experiencing those symptoms even without drinking coffee. It is imperative to get the amount of good bacteria up to the right threshold within your intestines.
I use Garden of Life: Primal Defense. Be well! I used to have IBS D in high school! It went away and I started drinking coffee, it gave me diarrhea and then months later I stopped drinking it, and still have diarrhea everyday now, even with no coffee… What could still be causing it??
I had instant diarrhoea about3 mins after eating a tomato with skin on. Now I do not drink coffee. Somehow my problem was coffee related. I doubt it anything to do with caffeine as I drink lots of tea now also contains caffeine , and also chocolate products. There is undoubtably something else in coffee which created my problem.

I, too have taken myself off coffee because of the severe diarrhea it causes. I recently learned that Cholestyramine Questran is used for people who have a syndrome after having the gallbladder removed of immediate diarrhea after eating. The Questran absorbed bile acids which are the main cause of the diarrhea. Since usually my post coffe diarrhea ends up being bile colored, I think I will try taking some minutes before my coffee and see if it makes a difference.
Questran is also given to lower cholesterol and I can use some help in that arena anyway. As with any medicine cholestyramine can have side effects. I will let you know the results of my non-randomized, uncontrolled, one person study is. I am hopeful! Shawn, I have these symptoms with my morning tea. I avoid it like the plague! Recently I started having stomach pains, and not exactly diarrhea but what I will describe as leakage. I was really concerned over this apparent developing bowel incontinence.

I have no other symptoms except this problem. Do you think it might be because i sleep late in the night and i have a coffe during lunch time? Let us know how you make out! Hi Shawn, thank you for the info. Since about age 55, onset of menopause.
Since I was a baby, I am now 58 I always suffered with constipation, I believe I have had true diarrhea twice in my lifetime. So, around age 55, seemed spaghetti sauces, salad dressings AND caffeine caused me to have mushy or loose stool.
I also think I may have IBS, as I had a couple weeks 2 mos ago of loose, watery, soft blobs of stool. Anyway, last night I went to Dunkin Donuts and bought a coffee at pm, a medium size. I usually have 2 good size cups in the morning and occasionally one around 7pm or so.
Those night coffees occasionally play havoc on my bowels in the a. So I am pretty sure a lot of caffeine does NOT like me in the morning. Coffee can sure cause looseness, but be on the lookout for other culprits!!! I drink a fair amount of coffee and it seems as though decafe makes me feel worst than regular coffee is that possible.
Especially if you drink a lot of it, and especially if you have problems with cream or non-dairy creamer. I take prescription meds for blood pressure first thing in the morning, then a cup or two of coffee.. The doc or the pharmacist could probably give you the best answer, but the small intestine is a long organ. WOW Shawn, thanks so much for the info.
I started having really soft poop and it would even come out when I passed gas — oh dear, how awful! My doctor at the time told me to try probiotics, but no one ever said anything about coffee. I have taken probiotics for years and really, no help. No one has ever suggested that my problem was caused by coffee, so I guess we will see.
Over the years, my symptoms have become nearly intolerable. It is extremely uncomfortable. Then, I also poop nearly every time I go to the bathroom, which could be 10 to 20 times per day! I drink 10 to 20 cups per day. I really hope you do let us know back here Penny.
Hi Shawn, I appreciate your website. I was diagnosed with IBS in after a very stressful time in my life. I had a colonoscopy and that was their conclusion since everything was normal.
